Nick was playing Fable 5 when it happened. He’d just taken down some type of giant bear when the sound of a car pulling into the driveway drew his attention. He stood and made his way to his door, his brow furrowing in confusion. Macey had said the dance didn’t even start until eight, which meant she’d only been at the dance itself for a half hour. Was the food beforehand that bad? he wondered, secretly hoping that Jared had been terrible and Macey had decided to call the whole thing off.
He was stepping down to the main floor, turning his head to look around the house for some sign of the other occupants of his home when he heard Lilly yell. She came running out of Macey’s parent’s bedroom, her eyes wide with fear as she moved faster than he had ever seen her move before.

Nick watched as both Lilly and Macey ran around the house, darting up the stairs to Macey’s bathroom, down the stairs to the kitchen to check on the food, upstairs to Macey’s room to get jewelry, and finally, right back down the stairs to the master bathroom in Macey’s parent’s bedroom. He didn’t understand why they were running around the house like it was the end of the world, and that just made him more dizzy as he watched them from his position by the vestibule window.
“I never understood why girls freak out about dancing,” Luke said from his spot against the front door. He was watching the girls scurry too, though there was humor in his eyes. Nick felt a blanket of peace lay timidly between them as they were entertained by the females of their household—it was one of the rare times they weren’t at each other’s throats.
